Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus … or at least, there was a Saint Nicholas. Nicholas was born in Greece somewhere between 270 and 276 A.D. He was a priest then a bishop of the Christian church, and was martyred on December 6, 346. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for our modern Santa Claus. Why “Santa Claus”? Well, “Klaus” is a German nickname for Nicholas, and “sinter” is the German word for “saint.” So Sinter Klaus, over the years, became Santa Claus in English!
His eyes – how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
