Today is Amelia Earhart’s birthday!
Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas, on July 24, 1987. She was a pioneer in American aviation and was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for making the first female solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. She was a best-selling author and helped found the Ninety-Nines: International Organization of Women Pilots. Her final flight was an attempt to circumnavigate the globe. She and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared on July 2, 1937, near Howland Island over the central Pacific Ocean. They were declared legally dead January 5, 1939.
