Paul Langerhans, a German pathologist, physiologist and biologist, was the first to discover the pancreatic cells that produce insulin, later called the islets of Langerhans. Langerhans successfully defended his doctoral thesis on 18 February 1869, in which he outlined his discovery of the “tiny islands of clear cells” that appear throughout the pancreas. It wasn’t long before their purpose was discovered: they produce insulin.
This is a very important discovery, especially for people like endocrinologists and diabetics. In honor of this helpful discovery, here are some medical t-shirts celebrating the little-known islets of Langerhans! These t-shirts would make great gifts for a doctor or endocrinologist or maybe a medical student.
