One of the most famous sinners-turned-saint in Christian history is
St. Augustine of Hippo. A philosopher and theologian of great renown even today, he lived in the fourth century at the time of the sack of Rome. He was a prolific writer; the most famous of his works,
City of God and
The Confessions of St. Augustine, are still popular today among philosophers and theologians. St. Augustine is one of the most important writers in Christian history for both Catholics and Protestants. Augustine died on 28 August 430, so his saint’s day is celebrated on August 28. He is considered the patron saint of brewers (because he was such a heavy drinker in his youth!), printers, theologians, sore eyes, and many cities.
